How Shane lost 35kg?

The year 2011 began with a rude awakening. During our family holidays my oldest son asked me to run around the local park with him. I ran about 40 meters before I became so tired I couldn’t keep up with him. He stopped, looked at me and said: “Dad, you are too fat and slow to keep up with me.”

My response was clear and simple: “Son, I promise you this time next year I will run here with you again and you will not be able to keep up with me.”
My inability to run around the park with my son was devastating. I had to do something about my sedentary lifestyle and my weight, which had ballooned to 125kg.
So I changed some simple things for the remainder of my holidays. I started to eat salads, stopped snacking and ate till I was satisfied instead of gorging myself until I was sick.
When I returned from holidays I started to walk each day and go a little further than the day before and I watched what I ate. But my most important change was to share the changes I was going to make with my wife and sons.  Declaring my changes gave gravity to what I was doing by sharing with others. Read More

The first month was very difficult, but as I moved a little more each day as I gained in confidence. I started to walk and run and as I lost weight I became confident enough to run more and walk a little less.
After six months I lost 15kg. Now weighing 110kg I needed to find greater challenges so I started to enter some races, such as the City2Surf, some 10km events and the Blackmore’s 21km half marathon. As I continued to gain in confidence I joined a running club and started to participate in events organised by new running club.
Don’t think this was easy. After most races I was sore for at least three days and could hardly walk, but I knew that as I continued the soreness would go away. The biggest change yet. But there were bigger changes to come.  As I began my own journey towards change I became determined to use my life to help others. My love for my own young sons gave me a strong motivation to help young children in need – particularly those whose lives have been torn apart through the sex slave trade. I wanted to help the helpless.
On November 1 I entered the toughest Ultra Marathon in Australia ‘The North Face 100” an Ultra endurance event which will take me between 15-20hours to complete.
This event is the catalyst to raise $ 100K for children sold into the sex slave trade through an international aid agency called Homes of Hope International. We are aiming to build safe houses to rescue children out of the sex slave trade and provide them with the opportunity to live their lives free of slavery, rape and torture.
This challenge is one I cannot do on my own so I enlisted the help of Sports Nutritionist, Susie Burrell, Energise Health Management (Nathan and Giselle Martin), and ultra marathon legend Peter Wilson to help me continue to move forward and make a difference in the lives of those who are trapped in slavery. As I write my story it is the beginning of Feb 2012 and I have lost 33kg. However, I have a lot of work to do to meet my goal weight of 75kg.
Please follow my progress as I work hard each day to change my circumstance and the lives of those who are unable to help themselves.

Giselle is a fantastic trainer and she was a vital part of my reaching my goal weight and she’s lots of fun too. I’m not just saying that because she is holding a 5kg dumbell over my head either. Thank you so much for helping me get this body.

Nathan thanks so much for helping me get my body back for my wedding day. I didn’t think I could ever do it. Thanks for your encouragement and belief in me. Even though I tried to sneak away on a few sessions, all that hard work paid off. I couldn’t have done it without you, lets keep it going!

Nathan & Giselle Martin are the consummate professionals when it comes to personal training. I had the pleasure of working with both Nathan and Giselle while on the tennis tour for 2 1/2 years and was truly impressed with their training methods and expertise.

Best trainer I've ever worked with! I really look forward to our sessions, Giselle mixes up training, she is tough, but extremely positive, which means you really end up challenging yourself! Best thing is I'm seeing the improvements in myself, with more energy, and a more comfortable feeling of well-being.. plus, keeping up with a couple of kids has become easier.

Dr Kuruosh Parsi (Dermatologist/phlebolist) introduced me to Energise Health Management Team.  I had been treated for 3 years for severe morphoea or localised sclerodema. The doctor suggested exercise would speed up my metabolism and blood flow and help the condition generally. How right he was. At aged 70 it was a daunting experience entering a gym for the first time. However, Nathan and Willow persevered and, along with Giselle in her role as massage therapist, I improved in a short time.  I could not now envisage leading my life without a personal trainer and wish women of my age would realise how important it is to be guided with exercise.

This is to confirm that Giselle Martin has been my personal physical trainer for two years. During that period she helped me in many matters: physical, mental and technical. Her task has been a big help for me, in my play and in my results. She has been always a support for me, in my good days and in my bad days. Giselle Martin is one of the best professional physical trainers: dedicated, loyal and optimistic. She is a very good person and I enjoyed all the moments we spent together, working, traveling, joking, etc

For the past decade I have bounced from trainer to trainer and for varying reasons I've never quite managed to achieve the goals I'd have hoped. Willow, Giselle and Nathan are the only team that have not only helped me to be the fittest I have ever been but their holistic approach to training has ensured that the changes I've made to my life are long lasting. They manage to motivate, nurture and educate in our sessions together and I know that in them I have gained a support team to help me through the rigours of not only a very physically demanding job but also day to day life.

I first met Nathan and Giselle Martin in 2005 and began training with them in 2006. After having two years in the Australian Institute of Sport I am currently back training with them. Our training comprises of various training methods including running, strength, stairs, hills, core, kinesis and also tennis specific footwork and agility. This variety and also the motivation and positivity that both Nathan and Giselle consistently provide, allow a perfect training environment. I enjoy every aspect of my fitness training which is crucial with my profession and that has a lot to do with Nathan and Giselle. I believe that they are two of the best trainers in the world and I am lucky enough to say that they are great friends of mine also.

"I hadn’t been training for over 12 months and I was starting to experience the onset of arthritis in my foot (long story – due to an accident many years ago). Action needed to be taken about my weight, confidence and my general well being. This is where Energise Health Management came through and kick started my healthy exercise routine.  I am now feeling committed and confident; as a result I have lost over 30kg in the process due to EHM expert training and program guidance."
